Demystifying the MRI Experience

If you have been scheduled for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan, it is natural to have questions and concerns.

Rest assured, we will walk you through the process, explain what to expect during your MRI appointment, and help alleviate any anxiety you may have.

At Lake Imaging, our goal is to provide a seamless and comfortable experience for all our patients.

Understanding MRI

MRI is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed images of the internal structures of the body. It is particularly useful in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, from brain and spinal cord disorders to joint and musculoskeletal injuries.

Preparation before the MRI

Before your MRI appointment, you may be asked to follow certain guidelines to ensure accurate imaging.

These guidelines typically include:

Clothing

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal objects or accessories. In some cases, you may be provided with a hospital gown to wear during the procedure.

Metal objects

Remove all metal objects, including jewellery, watches, hairpins, hearing aids, and removable dental work. Inform the radiology staff if you have any implants or devices, such as pacemakers or metal clips.

Food and drink

Follow any fasting instructions provided by your healthcare provider, especially if you are having an abdominal or pelvic MRI.

The MRI Procedure

When you arrive at Lake Imaging for your MRI, our friendly and experienced staff will guide you through the entire process.

Here’s what you can generally expect during the procedure:

Pre-scan assessment

A radiology technologist will review your medical history, discuss any concerns or questions you may have, and ensure you are prepared for the MRI.

Positioning

Depending on the area being imaged, you will be positioned on a padded table that slides into the MRI machine. The technologist will provide pillows or bolsters to help you maintain a comfortable position.

Noise and ear protection

MRI machines generate loud tapping or thumping noises during the scan. You will be provided with earplugs or headphones to reduce the noise and, in some cases, may be allowed to listen to music or watch a movie to help you relax.

Immobility and breath-holding

It is crucial to remain as still as possible during the scan to ensure clear and accurate images. In some instances, you may be asked to hold your breath for short periods to minimize motion artifacts.

Communication

Throughout the procedure, the technologist will maintain constant communication with you. You will be able to talk to them via an intercom system or use a call button if needed.

Post-MRI and Results

After the MRI, you will typically be able to resume your daily activities without any restrictions. The images obtained will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist, who will generate a comprehensive report of the findings. Your referring healthcare provider will then discuss the results with you and provide appropriate guidance and treatment options if necessary.

At Lake Imaging, we understand that undergoing an MRI can be a daunting experience for some. However, we strive to create a supportive environment and ensure your comfort throughout the process.

By following the guidelines provided and having a clear understanding of what to expect, you can approach your MRI appointment with confidence.
